CCE is pleased to announce the newly revised content outline for the Board Certified Coach Examination (BCCE). A new version of the BCCE is in development based on this content outline and will be available in early 2025.
The content outline was developed by a committee of 12 subject matter experts (SMEs)—all Board Certified Coaches—based on a thorough job analysis of practicing coaches. The job analysis respondents and SME committee represent diversity of gender, work setting, ethnicity, and more.
Regular job analyses ensure that examinations stay up to date with progress in the field and include relevant and timely content that reflects current trends and best practices. This job analysis surveyed nearly 400 coaches regarding the knowledge, skills, abilities, and work behaviors most prevalent and important in coaching today.
During a multiday meeting, SMEs evaluated the results of the job analysis to create the framework for the new examination. The BCCE will comprise 120 questions covering 6 content areas. In creating the examination blueprint, CCE used a combination of SME judgment and statistical analysis.
One area of focus for the SME committee was what it means to be a coach, explains Director of Assessments and Lead Psychometrician Unber Ahmad, PhD, MStat, ICE-CCP.
“In their discussions, the SMEs paid special attention to ethical considerations and appropriate scope—the distinction between coaching and related fields,” says Dr. Ahmad. “The content outline clarifies what it is to be a coach and what is out of scope for coaching.”
Item writing for the new BCCE will take a distinct approach, with questions presenting scenarios that reflect actual job practice. Because the examination is based in practical application, it presents a stronger assessment of requisite skill.
Current BCCs benefit from this process as well. CCE is committed to making sure examinations stay up to date with industry best practices so that credentials retain their value and utility.
Applicants for the BCC can look forward to the new examination next year. The advance release of the content outline will provide applicants with plenty of time to prepare.
